AC21 Activities
Over its 21-year existence, the Academic Consortium 21 developed a suite of programmes that did something unusual for a network of its size: they actually worked. Unlike many international consortia where activity lists exist primarily in annual reports, AC21's programmes generated measurable output — 80+ funded research projects, eight editions of a student forum, and eleven international conferences spanning four continents.
The activities fell into three broad categories, each addressing a different dimension of about the consortium's mission: education and student exchange, collaborative research, and institutional partnerships. What follows is an overview of each, with links to detailed pages covering individual programmes.
Education & Student Exchange
Two programmes anchored AC21's work in student-facing international education. The first was the Student World Forum, launched in 2005 and held annually or biennially until 2022. The second was the International Graduate School, a short intensive programme for doctoral candidates that ran from 2010 onwards.
Student World Forum
Eight editions across three continents. A week-long programme bringing 30–50 students together to discuss global challenges — from climate change to demographic shifts.

The Special Project Fund was AC21's mechanism for seeding joint research between member institutions. It operated as a competitive grant programme — modest in scale (typically ¥500,000–1,000,000 per project) but effective at catalysing partnerships that would not have formed otherwise. Between 2005 and 2020, SPF funded projects ranging from nanotechnology to public health, with most involving researchers from at least two continents.
Special Project Fund
Competitive grants for joint research across member universities. Over 80 projects funded between 2005 and 2020, covering STEM fields, social sciences, and interdisciplinary topics.

The final AC21 event, held at Stellenbosch University in March 2024, focused on SDG-aligned research and the transition from active consortium to preserved legacy.

The International Forum was the consortium's flagship convening event, held eleven times between 2002 and 2022. Each forum was hosted by a different member university, with themes ranging from sustainability and innovation to the role of universities in society. These were not mere networking events — they produced joint declarations and, in several cases, launched new collaborative projects that continued for years after the conference ended.
