Monthly Report No.59 (May 25, 2015)
Dear AC21 members,
Greetings from the AC21 General Secretariat!
The Student World Forum (SWF) 2015 and Steering Committee (STC) meetings held last month were a great success, thanks to the efforts of our colleagues at the University of Strasbourg and University of Freiburg who had committed to the organization of these events.
Here are this month's news and updates, featuring these two events:
1) Sixth AC21 Student World Forum
SWF 2015 took place from April 19 to 24 in France and Germany, hosted by the University of Strasbourg and the University of Freiburg, with 38 students from 18 member universities in 11 countries. This was the first unique attempt to organize an SWF through collaboration between two universities located in different countries, which was made possible by the geographical and historical proximity between the University of Strasbourg and the University of Freiburg.
The Forum's theme was "The European Experience in Local and Regional Democracy", under which lectures and sessions were given by experts in relevant fields, centering on cross-regional and sustainable initiatives in politics, economy, human rights and the environment in the EU member states, followed by lively Q & A sessions with many questions from students. The SWF's group activities including discussions and presentations were well received by students as opportunities to not only enhance their understanding, but also nurture friendships between each other.
There is no doubt that the SWF 2015 provided invaluable knowledge and experience to participating students through these well-designed programs.
2) 13th AC21 Steering Committee Meeting
The STC meeting 2015 was held on April 23 and 24 at the University of Freiburg, in the same week as the SWF was held.
This year's STC meeting saw 35 attendees who got together to discuss our plans and outlook for the year 2015, including 19 delegates from the STC member institutions.
The main agenda items discussed were:
- Revisions to the "AC21 Special Project Fund" Guidelines (application eligibility, number of awardees, selection method)
- Revisions to the "Financial Support for Participating Students in AC21 Events" Guidelines (application eligibility, amount of support, selection method)
- Future plans to take the AC21 collaboration and partnership to the next level (new initiatives for research and staff exchange, and active participation in international conferences, etc.)
The General Secretariat will email the summary of the STC meeting shortly.
After the STC meeting was adjourned in the afternoon of April 24, all the attendees joined the SWF's closing ceremony at the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle to hear the students' final presentations, which were impressive enough to be referred to as one of the highlights of the SWF 2015.
3) Seventh AC21-TUC NAFSA Working Breakfast 2015
Organized by the Technische Universität Chemnitz (TUC) to coincide with the occasion of the NAFSA, the Working Breakfast 2015 will be held on May 27, in Boston, MA, USA.
The venue will be the Hilton Boston Bay Back (40 Dalton Street, Boston).
4) AC21 Membership
The General Secretariat announced that the AC21 membership of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) from China was terminated effective April 1, 2015, based on the request from HUST and in accordance with the relevant provisions of the AC21 ARTICLES.
As of April 1, our current membership is 19 universities.
Thank you very much for your continued support of AC21 and its activities.
